"The Maoist insurgents have stepped up attacks across Nepal with reports of police and army being killed and wounded. The estimates of killed and wounded Maoist and Security Forces is usually supplied by tightly controlled State-run media and cannot be relied on. Despite promises of “ support in efforts to counter the Maoists” from the likes of visiting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca, and even with the latest weapons from the U.S., India, Belgium and the U.K., the U.S. trained Security Forces are losing ground to the well armed, well disciplined Maoists. An estimated 20,000 Maoists continue their hide-and-seek attacks and control more than 85% of the country. Outside the large cities, whose combined population is approximately 6 million, the majority population of 20,000,000 remain under the control or influence of the Maoists."
